At the moment Malta is in full bursting bloom, with spring flowers seeming to grow as quickly and abundantly as they possibly can in every nook and cranny. The fields are green and overflowing with produce, tall with wheat and corn, clover and wild grasses, all dotted with bright red poppies and yellow 'Ingliza' (sorrel).
It's as if Nature has to pump out as many colours and varieties of plants as she can before summer hits - usually overnight sometime in May - and there will be no more rain for at least three months. The greens turn to golds and ochres and then to umbers and siennas as the heat rises and the seeds hide themselves deep in the earth, waiting for the autumn storms. |
