I'm starting a four-week Drawing course on the 9th November - Saturday afternoon - from 2pm to 4.30pm in my studio in Manikata. I can GUARANTEE that I can help you to see the world differently, which makes it so much easier to draw anything you choose. Complete beginners and those that need to brush up their drawing skills are all welcome. The only materilas you will need are a cheap A4 sketchbook and a 2B pencil. 80 euro for the course, which will be very structured and so - well - don't miss any!

Well! After a busy summer painting jazz musicians and dancers, having a jazz exhibition, and generally getting very hot, autumn is here at last..... I was away in the UK for a couple of months (I filled 4 sketchbooks with drawing of people on the underground and on buses.....at the airports and generally in transit. I have to photograph them all before I can share them with you) and then decide what to DO with them..... it would be lovely to exhibit them in London somewhere, as that's where I did them. It's getting frosty in England though, so now is a good time to be back in Malta for many reasons; mainly becuase I love it here of course, but also because of the sunshine and my greinds, and my cats and my studio! SO - now to launch my Autumn activities..... First, this Sunday27th October is the Pumpkin Festival in Manikata and I will be painting there as usual. It’s a lovely village affair and an opportunity to buy some really unusual pumpkins, plus pumpkin pies and other local produce. Then, my next First Friday Gallery will take place at my studio /gallery in Manikata on Friday November 1st, opening from 5pm to 9pm. I’ll have lots of work on show, from this year’s Jazz paintings and landscapes to small sketches and prints. Pop in, meet other arty friends, and I’d love to show you around! I am also starting two classes in November – Basic drawing and watercolour classes – guaranteed to give you all the tools I can possibly think of to give you the confidence to tackle any subject you like! I have been teaching this course for years now, and I love it as it always gets people ‘going’. It’s suitable for complete and utter beginners and those who are ‘stuck’ or want to brush up on their drawing or watercolour skills. These will be held in my Manikata studio on Wednesday mornings from 10am – 12.30 pm, beginning on Wednesday November 6th. This is a structured course and each class leads on to the next, so it’s best if you attend all of them. 120 euro for 6 classes Outdoor painting in Villa Bologna, Attard – the wonderful gardens at Villa Bologna are a never ending joy to paint in. We work outside unless the weather is yukky, in which case we have a studio space in the pottery to work in. Every week I will give you a new idea to ‘play’ with – maybe working with charcoal, or sticks, or perspective..... I am always on hand to advise and direct, and help to inspire you! I generally work with watercolours outside, as they are easy to transport, but if you would like to bring any other medium, you are welcome to do that. I provide chairs, boards, water containers and enthusiasm! Classes begin on Friday November 1st 10 am – 12.30pm and will continue until December 13th. 120 euro for 6 classes, or 23 euro per drop-in class. For more details, directions, or just to say hi - please contact me here Oh and have a very happy autumn too! Jeni :-) So here I am still in London, drawing around London Transport and marvelling at the diversity of cultures all rubbing along together. An African girl in full headress arm-in-arm with a Pakistani in her colourful garb, a Siekh man, beturbanned and anoracked, an Indian lady in gowns and a chunky knit sweater, a group of swathed Muslim schoolgirls giggling on the bus about getting married.....
On the whole everyone just wants to get on with their own lives and is tolerant of everyone elses. Most people are using a mobile phone while they travel, which is interesting; what would we do without them now? I wouldn't want to live here again, it's all so different. I am the alien! I have become accustomed to Malta's smallness (in all senses) and the familiarity of knowing that wherever I go I usually know someone. On my last, brief, visit back a stranger recognised me in the supermarket and I was quite shocked, but the anonymity of London could be quite lonely couldn't it? Or is it because I have been away from England so long that I don't have friends here any more? I am hoping to be back in Malta for the November First Friday, but who knows. Meanwhile I'm just drawing on the experience of day-to-day...... |
